Japan, the country that brought us Karaoke, the Tamagotchi virtual pet and the Nintendo Wii, has a reputation for putting a technological spin on the kind of activity – singing, raising a pet, or keeping fit – that many of us prefer to carry out in real life, and now Honda’s boffins have turned their attention to cycling.

Like coffee? Like cycling? Get this.
If starting a ride with a strong espresso is a good thing, then starting a ride with an espresso drawn from beans supplied by an ex-pro cyclist must be a double-plus good thing, right?

Cycling the daily commute has helped a busy dad of nine pedal his way to a healthier and happier lifestyle – 25 years since he last rode a bike. Colin Smith from Luton shed two stone in just eight weeks by starting to cycle his five-mile journey to work a few times a week.

It's 20 years since Shimano took cleats, or clip-in technology, from the world of road racing to the everyday commute
Next time you're in the office and a newly arrived cycling colleague walks past making a faint click-clack noise as they go, they've either mistakenly put on their tap shoes or – a better bet – they are among the many devotees of the cleat, or clip-in pedal.

If you think having a few drinks after a hard race is a welcome reward that won't hurt, there are researchers that disagree. You will suffer for days, they say, and there are other nasty effects that will hurt your cycling.

Bradley Wiggins has slammed the planned shake-up to the program for the 2012 London Olympics, saying that it would kill off track endurance cycling. Cycling’s world governing body said last month it was planning a radical shakeup of the Olympic Games track schedule which could mean female cyclists gain parity with their male counterparts.

So it is at this time of year that I usually contemplate a ‘Winter Jacket’. Up until this point it would be fair to say that whatever it is be it shoes, coat, shirt, boots whatever… I always seem to just make do with what I have and generally suffer throughout the winter pilling on the layers to try and keep warm and dry.

The promoters of the Cycle Show are peddling the notion that cyclists are more attractive than other sportsmen
As well as giving you thighs of steel and an unhealthy interest in gear ratios and carbon fibre widgets, did you realise that an interest in cycling will make you more attractive to the opposite sex? Well, a PR-generated "survey" claims so, meaning it must be true, right?

This year's Cycle Show, officially the UK's biggest bicycle symposium, is making a special attempt to appeal to women, with "female-friendly features" including fashion shows and women-only maintenance sessions. But the absence of a queue for the ladies' loos at the Earl's Court venue, in London, spoke volumes about the male-dominated cycling fraternity. Women were outnumbered 20 to 1 at the trade-only opening day, suggesting the bike world has some way to go before getting the Fawcett Society's seal of approval.

Usually – by which I mean “always,” as far as I know – when someone does a bike giveaway, they have a certain bike in mind. You either win it, or you don’t. If you’re a roadie, maybe a new MTB doesn’t really trip your breaker. Or vice-versa. Or maybe as a hardcore cyclocross guy you’ve been wondering when someone’s going to give away anything but the lowest of the low end cyclocross bikes.
Well, this is the contest of your dreams, buckaroo. Consider the following hotness, if you will, and begin to obsess about which you would choose if you win (click any of the photos to see them up close and personal):

It's solid and practical, if a little heavy. But will people be able to resist stealing it?
Next summer, 6,000 bikes will be distributed around 400 locations in central London as part of the capital's cycle-hire scheme. A great idea, but I'm a bikie so what about the bike? At the London Cycle Show last weekend I took one for a spin.

In my hometown, group rides are in full-swing. There is one scheduled every night of the week except Friday. One of the things that I appreciate about them is that it doesn’t matter what level of rider you are, you can always find the right ride for you.
Monday nights are for beginners. The pace is comfortable and allows riders to experience the joy of being out on the bike with others as well as to learn riding skills within a close knit bunch. Even though I’m not a beginner, I enjoy going on these rides to encourage the new ones and to help set the pace.

I am a terrible descender.
Well, maybe not terrible. But I certainly would not call it a strong point in my repertoire of mountain bike throwing stars and nun-chucks. I do not know how many times I have eked out a lead over a competitor while climbing, only to have that lead squandered away when the trail goes downward. It’s vexing. Terribly vexing.

I have recently taken up running again. It is my first time running in 2009. I had no idea what to expect of the outcome, but I decided to venture into the “dark side” of running in order to get some of the off-season energy released.

A description of what IronLegs is all about...

So there I am, sitting on my bike at Blossom and Winton, enjoying the choicest evening of the year (this despite repeated hysterical warnings of the "thunderstorms with hail!!!" variety screaming from the radio all day--and blue skies at sunset). I'm in the center lane, waiting for the light to change, when I hear a voice from behind.

If you’re a fan of professional cycling, I cannot understand why you don’t understand a) that people dope and b) WHY they dope. I also don’t understand people who actually believe the whole peloton is clean, but that’s a completely different issue (one that’s already been proven wrong). Anyway, the point is that if you’re a fan of sports, any sport (it doesn’t matter which one), you should not EVER be surprised when a an athlete (from any sport) tests positive.
